Charlie Rangel (D) Vows To Bring Back Draft

Rep. Rangel will seek to reinstate draft

By JOHN HEILPRIN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 if the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has his way.

Rep. Charles Rangel D-N.Y., said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars and to bolster U.S. troop levels insufficient to cover potential future action in Iran, North Korea and Iraq.

"There’s no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm’s way," Rangel said.

Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who has unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on conscription in the past, said he will propose a measure early next year.

In 2003, he proposed a measure covering people age 18 to 26. This year, he offered a plan to mandate military service for men and women between age 18 and 42; it went nowhere in the Republican-led Congress.

Democrats will control the House and Senate come January because of their victories in the Nov. 7 election…

Rangel, the next chairman of the House tax-writing committee, said he worried the military was being strained by its overseas commitments.

"If we’re going to challenge Iran and challenge North Korea and then, as some people have asked, to send more troops to Iraq, we can’t do that without a draft," Rangel said…

Just as we foretold.

But it’s only because of Mr. Rangel’s concern for the troops of course. It has nothing to do with trying to foment an anti-war movement like we had for Vietnam.

“Days Of Rage” here we come!

Say, where is the "Rock The Vote" crowd? Weren’t they and the rest of George Soros’s stooges spreading the lie that the Republicans intended to restore the draft if they won in 2004?

The "youth vote" turned out in record numbers on election day and apparently voted very heavily for the Democrats. (Remember, Rangel was going to retire if the Democrats didn’t win control of the House.)

Do you think they’ll ever notice they were lied to?

Uh, no. Ignorance exists so the Democratic Party can exist. If Rangel succeeds in re instating the draft while Bush is still President….then it will be “BUSH REINSTATES DRAFT” instead of “weasle democratic pipe smoker sneaks draft bill to upset America again.”

I love it. Or, we have Democrats because of ignorance.

Or any other of several ways it can be phrased.

“Ignorance exists so the Democratic Party can exist.”

We should remember these bon mots and start a line of bumperstickers.

Ok, here’s a possible scenario….A Dem controlled Congress passes this ridiculous draft bill (still highly unlikely), It goes to the President attached to a bill he can afford to veto (most likely), and the President grows a spine strong enough to slap a veto on that bill (I’d like to think this was most likely, too).

So, the Democrats would no longer simply be able to pass the proposed draft off as a Republican “cause and effect” bill. The Republicans could argue easily that the Dems were in power, they were the ones to pass it through Congress, and it would be a Republican President who nixed it. This would become a 2008 point of contention for the Dems who passed a bill like this for the President to veto. Rim shot for the Republicans….But personally I don’t think it stands a chance happening that way. Just more posturing by the Dems. It will never pass. Too many Dems still see and understand that this is political suicide. Not every Dem in Congress is in a district like Rangel’s, where they will vote Democrat no matter what their Representative does.

Still, it would be nice for them to try…

Rangel and Frank want to draft all the gay young men, a lie from their election campaigns, trouble is it’s NO suprise to their minions.

My suggested bumper sticker “DNC LIES, USA DIES”.

  6. pagar

I think that will be the bumper sticker that separates the White Flags from those who will defend America. Where can we get one?

Rangel is so damned focused on discounting the professionalism of our men and women in uniform.

Rangel, another of their gifts, keeps on giving.

I think it’s to promote a class-envy thing, too. The poor blacks and white trash crackers shouldn’t be the only ones defending us, don’tcha know. ;)

Thing is, you can institute a draft lottery but you can’t force the military to actually USE it. If they are already getting enough volunteers, they wouldn’t need to actually draft anyone.

  15. BillK

Of course Rangel wants to reinstate the draft, but the fact is in today’s military, they can’t just accept anyone, Kerry’s perceptions aside.

There are two fallicies the left loves to propogate about the military:

    1) We can’t win
    2) We don’t have enough troops to be able to win anything

If the relatively minor engagements we’re involved in overseas have the military stretched that thin, other countries should just get it over with and invade the US now.

Not less than a year ago
A Dem supporter approached me; he was pissed about a rumor he had heard “Bush is thinking about reinstating the DRAFT”. He stated the usual Dems mantras about the war on terror, Iraq, Bush Lied the same o same o.

Now the truth is out; it wasn’t the Republicans, it wasn’t Bush, it’s one of his beloved Dems pushing for the DRAFT. I can guarantee you that he won’t come up to me with the same fervor and intensity as he did when he believed President Bush was going to reinstate it. NO! it won’t be mentioned and worst of all the chances are good that he will do a 180 an support it.

You’re probably thinking, now it’s your turn. Well, I’ll tell you, it just ant worth it, he an several others of the Cool Aid drinking verity are totally lost and blinded to reality and reason. The sad thing is they all Vote.

I believe WB’s analysis of how the bill will be shoved down our throats is highly probable. One thing the (less than) Honorable Congressman Rangal most likely thought out is how this would work out in the long run if it did run out. VA benefits for all citizens over 18 years of age (and many non-citizens also). It would be a whole new social spending program. The twilight zone aspect of it all would be that the spending would be for the military… all of those dems would have to deal with the ulcer-inducing decision of what to vote for: the draft vs. increases in military spending.

  20. srsmith

Rangel will try to get at least 1 Republican to vote with him so the media can portray it as a bi-partisan bill.

The people who are in the military volunteered. A small number are held in the military a short while past their enlistments in a program called “stop loss” which is to prevent us from reducing force levels too quickly due to peoples’ enlistments ending. Most of those held are willing to do their part even if they consider it inconvenient or even unfair to them personally. The enlistments they signed included those provisions.

Those people are a lot happier about being there than draftees were in Vietnam. A threat to present military members is that they’ll be forced out of the military if they misbehave. That’s not a threat to draftees who don’t want to be there in the first place. Those who don’t want to be there don’t try as hard to learn and to do outstanding work.

If we need a larger military, and I think we do, then we need to pay the volunteers properly and hire as many as we need. The Guard and reserves are not designed to be used full time. they are supposed to be a stop gap until force levels can be increased. Some of our leaders think that people who joined the military have signed up to be slaves to be used for whatever purpose the leaders think of.

Since this war can easily last more than 10 years as we bring down each terrorist sponsoring nation one by one, regular forces should have their strength increased so we still have the Guard and reserves for surge capacity if the unexpected happens.

God will continue to bless us if we stop denying Him. God has blessed America to amazing levels throughout our existence. We need to learn from others’ history so we don’t need to experience the loss/captivity those peoples went through when they trusted in their own might instead of God’s.

I love these idiotic dems, they are still functioning in the lalaland that the msm controls everything seen and heard and aren’t grasping that the InterNet allows those of us with functioning brain cells to find their traitor acts, historical flip flops and out right lies.

Rangel was behind the re-instatement of the draft (HR-163, 2003 and HR-4752, 2006) and probably those ‘draft’ email letters that went around in (no surprise here) October 2004. . . with of course the obligatory ‘Blame Bush’ attached.

These libs are so crazy - the draft is unfair to the poor - the rich can find a way to avoid it, the volunteer armed forces is unfair to the poor - they are forced into it by poverty and a lack of opportunities.

Let’s solve all the problems in America - kill the poor. Save a few bucks and then nothing will be unfair to them again. /sarc off/

Just another rant to make America the enemy, wrong and completely unfair to anyone and everyone and of course to blame bushitlerburtonco.

America is the greatest country in the World - proof: retards voted in a Congress of retards to dumb down America even farther. Except that I diss the mentally challenged - but when you read their votes, historical records and duplicitous lies - one can only call them retards - there is no other word that fits and the same to those who voted for ‘em.

  25. Warmonger Infidel

I saw an interview with the wrangler in which he put out this fuzzy logic:

If the war were a “good” war, people would be standing in line to sign up out of patriotism. Since it isn’t a “good” war, not enough are willing to serve so we need a draft. Now that’s fuzzy logic. Does the wrangler actually think if we were attacked again and there was no question of the war being a “good” war the asshats on our college campuses would be standing in line to enlist? Let’s just stick with the all-volunteer military we have. Pay them a decent wage at the lower paygrades so that we aren’t having holiday food drives to help feed the families of the lower paygrades and the enlistment/re-enlistment rate will take care of itself. Hell, it already is in most cases.
